Paul Carnell / Sound Director

Studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bristol University, acquired experience in radio, recording and music production through the following:

Collaborated with local commercial station ‘Radio West’ to produce a weekly student music programme, including location recording of student bands and drama.
Worked at Sound Conception Studios, Bristol as recording engineer for bands, advertising content and other programme material.

Joined Diploma Studios, Essex in 1985 as Technical Director responsible for maintenance of busy 24-track budget recording studio.

Led the studio’s ‘Audio Engineering and Recording’ courses as lecturer on all technical aspects of recording process.
Worked closely with local music producers (Nick Ryan, Dave Lowe, Henry Buckle) as programmer and keyboard player, gaining early experience of music production.

Set up technical consultancy business ‘Audio Engineering Services’ providing bespoke solutions for music and radio studios:

Designed early broadcast-quality sound sampler, purchased by clients such as David Gilmour and Madonna.
Designed and installed audio and digital inter-connection systems for one of London’s largest new music studios, Swanyard in Islington.
Worked with RNIB on proposal to add audio commentary to spare lines on the analogue TV signal, developed prototype system for demonstration to BBC.

Contracted to Sony Music in 1990 as recording artist, subsequently sold >1 million albums over 8 year career as professional musician and record producer. Extensive touring experience and exposure to US community and commercial stations.

Recent career as consultant Electronic Engineer includes design work for major companies such as Schneider, Honeywell and Rockwell Automation. Own private recording studio for personal music production and voice-over work.
