First and foremost, I’m an Essex Boy (well, old man really) and proud of it! Born and raised in sunny Southend-on-Sea, I had to move away from the county in my twenties because of work. After several decades of travelling the world, and living in places as diverse as Nigeria, Barbados, Washington DC and Surrey(!) I decided to move back to my county of origin. I am now a proud resident of Maldon. No, I’m not a Maldonian – you need at least six generations of ancestors to have lived in the town to claim that honour! But it is a beautiful place to reside, and in the ten years I have lived here I’ve walked most of the footpaths and seawalls along this wonderful stretch of coast. Maldon District’s recommended walks on their website were developed by yours truly. I am also a lover of well-kept traditional ales and local pubs – I was Chairman of the Maldon and Dengie Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for several years.
So, my programme, Our Coast, is going to explore the Saltmarsh Coast of Essex – each week, I’ll visit a particular town or village in the area. We’ll look at places of interest, and I’ll reveal unusual and quirky facts about them. I want to meet the local people and find out what they love about where they live, and what they’d like to change if they could. I’ll give you ideas for good walks around these towns and villages and highlight some of the good places to eat and drink locally. Oh, and we will also have plenty of good music for you to listen to as we discover Our Coast together!
